Decisions Create Destiny

One of the most powerful shifts that we can make that will transform our lives is making a decision. Decisions are magical. Deciding to do something is a game changer.  The moment of decision is one of the most profound moments in our lives.  The moment we decide on something we have taken ourselves out of limbo and moved our lives to a different place.

Let me share a story with you

Years ago I was working for a small business as their accountant.  This firm was losing money every month.  Vendors who we owed money to would call all day – everyday.  We had a hard time meeting payroll.  As a result the company was short staffed and those of us who were there all working too many hours.  My hours were long, the days were stressful, I hated the work and there was no end in sight.  This company was definitely not going to make it financially.

I was miserable there.  I looked like I had aged 15 years judging from some family pictures that were taken of me at that time. My friends encouraged me to look for another job.  My family begged me to look for another job.

But – my thinking went something like this:

They need me and would have a hard time without me.  Where am I going to find another job? The economy is not good.  And even if that were not true – I am really tired and don’t have the energy to pick myself up again and start to look for other work.  I have used most of my vacation days – so how would I find the time to interview for potential jobs?

Does any of this sound familiar to you?  We all do it.  We all keep ourselves in a place that we don’t belong for reasons that we imagine are true.

Every morning I woke up when my alarm went off and as my feet would touch the floor as I got out of bed – I would ask myself how I was going to find the strength to make it through another day.Until one day – I decided to ask a better question.

Why am I putting up with this?  How can I get myself out of this situation?

I decided one morning to find another job and that was it. I was going to start looking.  I didn’t know where the new job was, or how I was going to find it at the moment, Nonetheless, the decision was made.

Every morning when the alarm went off after that I felt lighter and happier.  It was incredible.  I was still working for the same company, but the wheels had been put into motion and I felt a whole lot better.

It took a few months, but I did find something else.

This is what I learned:

Just deciding is powerful

Just deciding even before you create and implement a plan will change everything.  It changes what you do, how you think what you expect and how you feel.

So what is a decision?

  1. ‍a position or opinion or judgment reached after consideration
  2. the act of making up your mind about something
  3.  firmness of purpose or character; determination

It is from the Latin word dēcīsiō, and it literally means to cut off.  It means that you have cut off other options and you are no longer going to be directed in different directions.  You will no longer be in limbo.  The decision becomes the outcome.

This means that you no longer are going to waffle.  You have singleness of purpose – you know where you are heading and you are fully committed to your desired results.  Deciding is powerful.  The effect that deciding has on your life is profound.

Deciding is a game changer.

There may be fear along the way.  Every time we decide to make a major change in our lives fear and doubt always creep in.  Your plan may not go smoothly for a while.  Some of the details of how you are going to implement the shift will change and be refined.  But – the end game is the same.  You will get there soon enough.

Most of the time when I was thrown off course was because I didn’t know how to bridge the gap from where I was to where I was going.  When I started looking for that new job things didn’t go smoothly at first.  It took me a while to get myself in motion.  There were many times that I was just discouraged and questioned myself.

I believe that this is the point where most people give up.

Don’t do it.  The goal is still the same.  Stand by your decision.

Make a decision right now to have the life that you want and claim it as your own – and don’t turn back. Once the decision is made your life has been altered.  What is left to do is getting there. Those are just the details.  The details effect how long it will take you to implement your plan, how you will implement it – how much it will cost you in terms of time and energy – but make no mistake the decision is made.

So what are you putting up with?

What decision do you need to make today to change where you are heading?
